IV Sedation Dentistry

For most people, a visit to the dentist is at worst, totally uncomfortable, or at best, a chance to show off how religiously they’ve flossed. With proper dental hygiene, a trip to the dentist is an uneventful but important part of taking care of your teeth.

There are, however, some patients who experience a great deal of anxiety at the dentist, even for relatively common procedures such as check ups, fillings, and cleanings. For these individuals, a dental appointment can be a disproportionate source of distress.

A potential solution for patients such as these is sedation dentistry. Kanata based patients should speak to their dentists at Centrum Dental to see if sedation dentistry is right for them.

Sedation dentistry can take several forms. The most common and least dramatic is gas based. Patients are administered Nitrous Oxide, commonly referred to as laughing gas. This is done with a comfortable mask. Nitrous Oxide’s effects can be felt quickly, and they wear off soon after the patient stops breathing it in. Oftentimes your dentist will allow you to drive yourself home if it’s the only form of sedation used.

Another option is oral sedation, which involves taking a prescribed oral sedative in pill form.

IV sedation, administered by your IV dentist, can take several forms. Most common is what is called “twilight sedation”. This involves the intravenous administration of a sedative that is strong enough to render the patient immobile, but still at least partially aware of their surroundings. IV sedation also tends to induce a feeling of calmness and detachment from one’s self, which can be useful for patients who otherwise would experience anxiety and discomfort during a dental procedure.
