Skin Cancer
According to Statistics Canada, cancer is the number one cause of death among Canadians. Skin
Cancer is among the most common of cancers in Canada and is one of the most
preventable.Â
There are more than 80,000 new cases of skin cancer in Canada annually,
more than breast, lung, prostate and colon cancer combined!
As more than 65% of
Canadians visit a dentist anually, dentist will routinely screen for any potential lesions in
the head and neck area as part of the regular checkup. Be sure to mention to your dentist any
recent growth on your skin that isÂ
1. Asymmetrical- one half of the mole is of a
different shape than the other half
2. Irregular Borders- the edges of the mole are uneven
or blurry
3. Irregular Colours- the colour of the mole vary throughout it
4. Larger
Diameter- any mole more than 6mm across, or about the size of a pencil eraser
5. Evolving
appearance- the mole is changing in size, shape or feel.Â
As many forms of skin
cancer are easily treated in the early stages, be sure to discuss any suspicious mole with your
dentist and/or MD.Â
